چکیده

We investigate collineation groups of a finite projective plane of odd order n fixing an oval and having two orbits on it, one of which is assumed to be primitive. The situation in which the group fixes a point off the oval is considered. We prove that it occurs in a Desarguesian plane if and only if (n + 1)/2 is an odd prime, the group lying in the normalizer of a Singer cycle of PGL(2, n) in this case. For an arbitrary plane we show that the group cannot contain Baer involutions and derive a number of structural and numerical properties in the case where the group has even order. The existence question for a non-Desarguesian example is addressed but remains unanswered, although such an example cannot have order n ≤ 23 as computer searches carried out with GAP show. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Intransitive collineation groups of ovals fixing a triangle

We investigate collineation groups of a finite projective plane of odd order fixing an oval and having two orbits on it, one of which is assumed to be primitive. The situation in which there exists a fixed triangle off the oval is considered in detail. Our main result is the following. Theorem. Let p be a finite projective plane of odd order n containing an oval O: If a collineation group G of ...

Collineation Groups of Translation Planes of Small Dimension

A subgroup of the linear translation complement of a translation plane is geometrically irreducible if it has no invariant lines or subplanes. A similar definition can be given for "geometrically primitive". If a group is geometrically primitive and solvable then it is fixed point free or metacyclic or has a normal subgroup 2a+b a of order w where w divides the dimension of the vector space. Si...

Collineations of the Subiaco generalized quadrangles

Each generalized quadrangle (GQ) of order (q2, q) derived in the standard way from a conical flock via a q-clan with q = 2e has subquadrangles of order q associated with a family of q + 1 (not necessarily projectively equivalent) ovals in PG(2, q). A new family of these GQ is announced in [1] and named the Subiaco GQ. We begin a study of their collineation groups. When e is odd, e ≥ 5, the grou...

Collineation Groups Which Are Primitive on an Oval of a Projective Plane of Odd Order

It is shown that a projective plane of odd order, with a collineation group acting primitively on the points of an invariant oval, must be desarguesian. Moreover, the group is actually doubly transitive, with only one exception. The main tool in the proof is that a collineation group leaving invariant an oval in a projective plane of odd order has 2-rank at most three.

A Generalization of a Result of L. Baumert and M. Hall About Projective Planes of Order 12

In [ 1 ] it was shown that there is no projective plane of order 12 which possesses a collineation group of order 12 consisting of elations with a fixed point as a center and a fixed line as its axis. We prove THEOREM A. There is no projective plane of order 12 which possesses a collineation group of order 4 consisting of elations with a fixed point as a center and a fixed line as its axis. Pro...
